Re-decorating our bedroom with my temporary dream closet :-)

Ok, so hubby & I are going to undertake re-decorating our bedroom as part of our Spring cleaning routine. I get bored easily when a room looks the same way for too long so I love re-decorating. This time we're switching it up just a little more than usual because after months of budgeting and intense negotiations, I am finally getting my very own wardrobe system!!! I am sooo excited!!! Can you tell? lol. Hubby and I have been sharing a descent size closet (about 94in wide by 95 in tall) for far too long (a Diva needs her space) lol. Our current closet is a descent size, but the issue is organization, plus I like things just a little bit (meaning a lot) neater than hubby. I hate when things (especially clothes) are out of place. Hubby can function in what he calls "organized chaos", I don't share that philosophy lol.

We've thrown around many ideas to rectify our closet issue: 1- turn our second bedroom into a walk in closet. It was a good idea, it would definitely give us more wardrobe space, and with the help of a wardrobe organization company like CaliforniaClosetCompany we would be able to get all the bells and whistles of complete wardrobe organization. The con- Turning the second bedroom into a closet is too permanent of a solution for me. The second bedroom is currently where I use as a makeup room/ relaxation room/ office which can easily be converted into a bedroom if we had an overnight guest. Also with thinking about children, I wouldn't want our children sleeping in the closet lol. Another con was the cost of turning the second bedroom into a closet- with a quote from CaliforniaClosets, we were looking upwards of $5000 minimum !!!! Do you know how many shoes and tech gadgets that can buy for hubby and I? lol

2- We thought about putting an organization system into our current closet, but the reality is that the space (although a good size for most people) really isn't enough space for hubby and I to share without bumping heads. I like my clothes super organized. I feel like if your coset is organized and appealing to your eyes, it will encourage you to shop your closet and dress up a bit more.

Option 3- an IKEA Pax system. First I must say how much I enjoy shopping at IKEA lol. My style is very modern contemporary so IKEA is right up my alley. You can get some great pieces for very great prices. Although I can't vouch for the quality of all of their items, some are really outstanding for the price.
Now unto the Pax system, each time hubby and I go to Ikea, I hardly every leave the showroom without stopping by the closets, even when we weren't thinking about getting new closets. The thing that makes the Pax system stand out is all of the bells & whistles accessories that you can use to get the closet system to function exactly the way you want. It's basically semi-custom closets. You get all of the organization tools of custom closets, but in pre-sized wardrobe frames. The frames comes in 2 heights: 80" & 92", and 3 widths: 19", 29", & 39". You can mix and match as you desire to fit the space that you want. They also come in various colors and door finishes, not to mention all of the various interiors. The pro is that it is way more affordable than going with complete custom closets, it doesn't require a whole room, and you can take it apart whenever you are ready to move very easily. The only con I can think about is that you must work with their closet dimensions (our wall can hold about 130", the configuration that we decided on is 127 inches) which is ok for us.

Needless to say that we decided on option 3 and I'm super excited. Not just because of that, but because after intense negotiations and compromise with hubby, he has agreed to let me have the entire wardrobe system (127 inches) just for my things!!!

What did he get in return.... He gets to keep the original closet for all of his things as well as a flatscreen HD television in our bedroom. I normally hate tv's in the bedroom, especially since I don't watch television often, but hubby had to get something out of the deal lol (I really do have the best hubby in the world :-). I figure that as long as t is out of the way it shouldn't bother me too much since we already have a massive television in our living room that he watches sports on.

All in all we think that choosing the Pax system is a great choice for us for now. Of course like every Diva, I dream of the day when we will have a large master suite with massive closets like Kimora Lee, but for now, these closets are a dream come true. I can't wait to get them this weekend. I'm soo excited.

Here is a picture of the closet system. I'm probably going to get it in a different color, but this configuration is pretty close to what I want...

I'm also going to take some before and after pics of our bedroom redecorating experience so stay tuned... :-)

This was the commercial that sold hubby on it after months of us (mostly me) talking about it lol ....

  6. Dolapo,

I stumbled upon some of your videos on YouTube, and I'm not sure how to say this, but you really touched me with your words in your Self Esteem video. My heritage is Indian, and growing up I was ridiculed a lot for my looks. The kids in Chicago were not very kind.
Then I visited India, and family members made fun of me--my face, my skin, my height were usually the targets. It was nonstop destruction. I'm 23 now, and I've come to realize I've put a lot of things on hold. I prayed a small prayer this morning, logged on to check my e-mails, hopped over to YouTube and found you. Thanks for making me feel good about myself.
